The prize is assigned for the best PhD thesis in numerical linear algebra. This is the first time it is bestowed upon an Italian. Massei was a student of the Phd course in Mathematics at the Scuola Normale from 2017 to 2019.

Pisa, 19 June 2020

Stefano Massei, former PhD student at the Scuola Normale Superiore, currently at the Eindhoven University of Technology, has won the prestigious Householder prize for the best PhD thesis in numerical linear algebra. His thesis, titled "Exploiting rank structures in the numerical solution of Markov chains and matrix functions", discussed in 2017, was written under the supervision of Dario Bini, of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pisa.

The prize, honoring Alston S. Householder, one of the pioneers of numerical linear algebra, was established in 1971, and is assigned every three years by an international committee. This is the first time it is bestowed upon an Italian. Together with Massei's thesis, the prize went to that of Estelle Massart, from the Université Catholique de Louvain.
