Pisa, 2 march

Dear students,

As you are aware, the Scuola is closely monitoring the evolution of the current coronavirus emergency at a national level. Being closed communities with a high number of contacts, our colleges are at a particularly high level of risk of respiratorily transmitted diseases such as COVID-19. As a safety measure for all those of you who are residents at the colleges and all others who frequent the Scuola, I should like to remind you of the few simple precautionary steps that you can take that can make all the difference. I shall also enclose the latest updates stemming from the new specific indications from the Ministry of Health as to the procedures to be adopted should you develop a temperature.

1)    Scrupulously follow the rules of hygiene (wash your hands, cough into a handkerchief or the crook of your elbow, avoid close contact with those suffering from acute respiratory infections, do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands, and avoid gatherings where possible).

2)    Reduce your movements to the minimum strictly necessary – in particular towards areas at risk for communal transmission as identified by DPCM (Decree of the President of the Italian Republic) of 1st  March 2020 (updated to today, 2nd March: Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna and the provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Savona), herein  denominated YELLOW ZONES.

3)    If you have not already done so, notify promptly the Department of Prevention for your territorial health authorities (for Pisa 050 954444, and for Florence 055 5454777),  as well as your family doctor, if you have passed through or sojourned during the last 14 days in any of the RED ZONES (in Italy to this date, 2nd March, the municipalities of Bertonico, Casalpusterlengo, Castelgerundo, Castiglione D’Adda, Codogno, Fombio, Maleo, San Fiorano, Somaglia, Terranova dei Passerini in the province of Lodi and Vò Euganeo in the province of Padova). In addition, send an e-mail to  emergenza.coronavirus@sns.it.

4)If you have not already done so, notify promptly the Department of Prevention for your territorial health authorities (for Pisa 050 954444, and for Florence 055 5454777),  as well as your family doctor, if you have come into contact during the last 14 days with anyone suspected of being or confirmed as being affected by the coronavirus. In addition, send an e-mail to emergenza.coronavirus@sns.it

5)    If you have not already done so, promptly send an e-mail to emergenza.coronavirus@sns.it if you have been in the YELLOW ZONES during the last 14 days.

6)    All those developing a temperature, with or without cough or sore throat – and without having been in an area or situation of risk (a red or yellow  zone or contact with suspected or confirmed cases) – are advised to stay in their rooms, keeping to a bare minimum their contact with the outside world and with other students, and to report their state of health by writing to the e-mail address emergenza.coronavirus@sns.it, providing a contact phone number and the name of their college of residence. Such cases do not fall within the Ministry of Health definition of suspected cases and are to be considered first and foremost as infections due to common seasonal viruses, although they will be monitored by the Scuola.

7)    All those developing a temperature, with or without cough or sore throat  – and who have been in an area or situation of risk (a red or yellow  zone or contact with suspected or confirmed cases) – must promptly self-isolate in their room, contact their family doctor and, if appropriate, call the emergency number 118; they must also report their state of health by writing to the e-mail address emergenza.coronavirus@sns.it, providing a contact phone number and the name of their college of residence.

Given this difficult situation, which it is important neither to conceal nor to exaggerate, I count on your collaboration and sense of responsibility so that, in addition to all the other preventive measures already put into place, we can adhere to  these new measures in order to limit the risks to our community.

My very best wishes to you all.
