Enrico Bombieri, one of the world’s most distinguished mathematicians, will be in Pisa in September visiting the Scuola Normale. Winner of the Fields Medal in 1974 – the only Italian ever to win the prestigious award (like a Nobel prize for mathematics) – Bombieri is Emeritus Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he was IBM von Neumann Professor from 1978 to 2010. Previously, from 1974 to 1977 he was a professor at the Scuola Normale, where he is returning now as a member of the scientific committee of the workshop “Diophantine Geometry”, to be held from 20 September to 20 October, as part of the ERC project run by Prof. Umberto Zannier. During his stay in Pisa, Bombieri will hold two workshops of a more technical nature, the first on September 18 (at 4 pm, Aula Mancini). On 24 September he will be giving a talk entitled “The Mathematical Truth” for a wider audience, as part of the Colloqui della Classe di Scienze (3 pm, Aula Bianchi).
