The 2021 edition has been published of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the rankings drawn up by the Quacquarelli Symonds agency which every year assess the universities around the world also for individual academic areas. For this edition, the QS agency reviewed 1453 universities located in 153 countries, for 51 disciplines divided into 5 macro sectors, based on indicators including reputation and number of citations.

In the Art & Humanities macro area, the result of the Scuola Normale stands out in the academic discipline "Classics & Ancient History", ranking second in Italy and ninth worldwide (last year it ranked second in Italy and eighth worldwide), thanks exclusively to reputational interviews, which in this individual discipline account for 100%.

A good result was also achieved by the Mathematics academic discipline, within the Natural Sciences macro area, ranking third in Italy and 110th worldwide, and by that of the Physics and Astronomy sector, also within Natural Sciences, in which the SNS ranks sixth in Italy and 129th worldwide.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject is one of the most penalizing for the Scuola Normale Superiore, as it does not take into full consideration the size of an institution such as the Normale, with its lower number of researchers and students than those of generalist universities.
